Nothing says quality like a front door

As you know, I walk our neighborhood a few times a week. The homes that really stand out to me usually have beautiful front doors or awesome landscaping. So here is an article to help you see why your front door is a important aspect of your home.

<a href="http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=15673918" target="_blank">Solid wood door</a> image via Shutterstock.
Solid wood door image via Shutterstock.

Every good tract builder -- even the most parsimonious -- will usually spring for a good-quality door and lockset at the front entrance of their new homes. Why? Because marketing studies have demonstrated that a good solid-feeling front door leaves an impression of quality that carries over throughout the house. Builders refer to this sometimes illusory impression of quality as "perceived value."
The same trick can work for your own home. You may not be able to afford hardwood panel doors or first-quality locksets throughout your house, which could run to hundreds of dollars per door. But chances are you can afford a good-quality front door and, even more important, a first-rate entrance lockset.
Many prewar homes have beautiful front doors equipped with really substantial locksets. If you're lucky enough to still have yours, don't replace it. A decent finish carpenter can repair a sagging or scraping front door fairly easily. Likewise, a balky lockset can be taken to a locksmith for repair.
On the other hand, if your front door is flimsy, uninteresting or truly beyond repair, consider replacement. The choice of door designs (and price ranges) is vast. However, most entrance doors fall into one of three basic categories: steel, fiberglass and wood. The price variations between common versions of each are surprisingly small, so choose them on merit, not cost.

Steel doors won't warp -- the main reason they're marketed for residential use. Many also have good insulative value. On the downside, they can rust and dent, and many are embossed with grossly exaggerated wood grain patterns that aren't very convincing on close inspection.
Fiberglass doors combine the warp resistance of steel with excellent insulative value and a much more realistic wood grain look. They can be planed and sanded, and are designed to accept either paint or stain (although the staining procedure is different than for wood). A carefully finished fiberglass door presents a fairly convincing copy of wood, while requiring less maintenance over time.
Still, nothing has quite the heft of a solid wood door. Genuine wood presents a look and feel of quality that neither steel nor fiberglass can match -- one reason the latter products are so anxious to imitate it. Yet wood doors do have drawbacks, including susceptibility to warpage and rot, so-so energy efficiency, and a need for vigilant maintenance.
Once you've found a door that suits you, think about a good-quality entrance lockset. There are lots of manufacturers to choose from, but only a handful make truly first-class products. Look for high-quality locksets at better hardware and lumber dealers, and ask a sales assistant for help.
Many styles of lockset are available with matching door knockers, doorbell escutcheons, and the like. Because not all finishes are in stock, you may have to order a few weeks in advance. And be prepared to pay several hundred dollars for a decent-quality entrance lockset, and more for paired doors.
At these prices, you'll be sorely tempted to buy a cheaper lockset that "looks just the same." But it won't feel the same or last the same. Remember what builders have known for decades: You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

Update To Yesterday's Alert

A burglar was at large Tuesday after assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Friendswood
According to Friendswood police, the teen was home alone in the 16100 block of Bougainvilla when a man kicked in the front door around 10:40am.
Police said the girl was taking a shower at the time. The suspect reportedly realized someone was home, and he walked into the bathroom and stepped into the shower.
After a brief struggle, the victim was able to call police and the suspect fled on foot.
The victim told police the man said he had a gun. When officers arrived, they began looking for him but had no luck.
The burglar is described as a 19- to 20-year-old black male between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet tall. He was wearing a T-shirt and blue jean shorts or pants. He had short hair with stubble on his chin and had a deep voice, police said.
A police K-9 was able to track the path of the assailant into the Heritage Park subdivision near the area of Mountain Timber and Leigh Canyon before losing the scent. There is no description of a getaway vehicle.
Investigators are following up leads. Police officials are concerned because this crime may be connected to an incident nearby. On February 18 in the 1200 block of Arbre Lane, a burglar entered through the rear door of a residence while a female was home. The burglar stole a purse that was later recovered at a public park in the Heritage Park subdivision.
Anyone with information is urged to call Friendswood police.

Preventing Identity Theft

This information comes from the Friendswood Police Department's Tip of theWeek.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Guarding your Identity
Identity fraud is one of the fastest-growing financial crimes in America, accounting for losses in the billions of dollars every year. The following are tips for your protection and advice on what to do if it happens to you:

• Don’t have your driver’s license number or Social Security number printed on your checks.

• Don’t carry your Social Security card or birth certificate in your wallet or purse.

• Try not to carry more than one credit card in your wallet

• Don’t carry credit card receipts. Keep them safe or destroy them

• Don’t carry account passwords with your cards or write them on the cards

• Shred all credit card offers mailed to you

• Never give your credit card number or bank account information to anyone calling you.

• Ask to have your checks mailed to your bank, not to your home

• Don’t leave outgoing mail in your mailbox; drop it off at a post office instead

• When paying with your credit card, encourage clerks to check your identification

• Review monthly bills carefully for unexplained charges

• Shred all documents with account numbers before disposing of them

• Order only from secure, reputable Internet sites

• Order your credit report from the three major credit bureaus and make sure the information is correct.

• Make photocopies of the items in your wallet (both sides). Keep this photocopy in a safe place.

If someone has stolen your identity:
• Call your local police department and file a report. Get a copy of the report in case the bank, credit card company or others need it later.

• Notify all three credit reporting bureaus. Tell them to put a fraud alert on your file and ask that no new credit be granted without your approval. Call Equifax at 1-800-685-1111, Experian at 1-888-3973742, or Trans Union at 1-800-916-8800. Or on-line: Equifax.com, Experian.com and Transunion.com respectively.

• Change your account numbers for banking, credit cards and utilities. Put passwords on all new accounts

Home Selling Season Is Approaching

Although there is no true season for selling a home, there are major factors that will help. Most sales occur during the Spring and Summer seasons. Many buyers and sellers have families and do not want to uproot them during the school year or mid semester. So you will see an increase with homebuyers both locally and relocation buyers from out of state in those months. Well if you are needing to sell then get off the fence and get ready now!!

In March 2012 Heritage Park Friendswood Homes Sold was 12.
In 2011 the number of Heritage Park Friendswood Homes Sold was 17!!!
